Sectors Still Differ in Executive Representation

We examined the overall percentage of executives by sector. Then, we focused on 5 specific industry areas and evaluated executives from the VP/Head level to the C-suite of each company.

Women Executives. The music distribution sector has the highest percentage of women executives (47.8%). This is significantly greater than any other company type, all of which fell below 40%. In the distribution sector, women executives are nearly on par (47.8%) with their male counterparts and are near proportional representation with the U.S. Census. Women fill 39.4% of executive positions at record labels, 38.3% at music groups, 37.6% in publishing, and 37.2% at streaming companies.

Underrepresented Executives. The record label category stands out as the leader for underrepresented executives. Less than one-third (30.1%) of underrepresented individuals hold executive positions in this industry domain. Other sectors clustered around a quarter of executives (music groups=25.1%; music distribution=23.1%) who were from an underrepresented racial/ethnic group. Lastly, streaming (17.9%) and publishing (16.3%) were least likely to have underrepresented executives on their company rosters.

However, all of these industry sectors still lag behind proportional representation with the U.S. population (41.6%).

Women of Color. Record labels (13.4%) are significantly more likely than streaming (7.5%) and publishing (6.9%) to be inclusive of underrepresented women in leadership. Music groups (11.8%) and music distribution companies (9.9%) hold a middle position.
