Avtomat
Avtomat is a person with way too many interests – an openly queer composer, producer, DJ and vocalist, proud member of the Ciężki Brokat crew, ex-Oramics member (2019-2022), co-creator of Radio Kapitał, Polish ambassador for Keychange and SHAPE Platform 2021 resident. He also creates visuals as a graphic designer, typographer and 3D/AI illustrator. His own music has morphed several times throughout the last 15 years – from industrial, purely synthetic timbres, through emotive polyphonic vocal compositions with band Pleśni, to a perplexing fusion of rhythmically and sonically jagged, bass-heavy club tracks on 'Gusła (Human Rites)' (out via Tańce), 'Doolska' EP, released on limited vinyl by the London-based 51-53 Records and the more experimental output of the latest 'Lamenty' EP.
He was able to present his music during numerous festivals (Unsound, CTM, Schiev, Up To Date, Tauron Nowa Muzyka, Les Siestes Electroniques, Audioriver) in Poland and abroad - including the legendary Berghain (ie. Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Prague, Oslo, Copenhagen, Ljubljana), recorded mixes for Resident Advisor, DJ Mag, CRACK, Ransom Note and remixed tracks by Kamp or Baasch. Between 2014 and 2016 he has been composing and creating impromptu live music for an interactive theatre play Method of National Constellations (i.e. during Modern Art Days in Białystok), in 2019 he created quadraphonic sound and music for Jawić się and in 2020 he reprised with sound design and music for the guerilla street play Manifesta put on during the Polish Women’s Strike and original score for Ideologix, a US-written and directed queer opera. The sensation of a never-ending musical split has led him towards the more hybrid areas of electronic music, which he also dabbles in during his DJ-sets.
In the club his fifteen-year experience of supporting queer, anti-fascist and underground scene, spinning vinyl, CDJs and using digital controllers results in an almost annoyingly disparate selection of the most forward-thinking sound offered by today’s scene. In his series of DJ-sets and club nights (Ciężki Brokat, W Mocy Nocy, the moody Dystopia) and curated events (ie. the official Warsaw Pride after party or Unsound's Ephemera Festival, during which he played a back to back set with TSVI) he blends unusual rhythmic patterns and futuristic sounds without forgetting the more humane qualities like melody and harmony, all kicked up a notch with his improvised vocals.
He has supported sets by VTSS, Crystal Castles, Emika, Miss Kittin, Lotic, Danger, Jennifer Cardini, Tommy Cash, Little Big, Octo Octa, TSVI, Rui Ho, Dick4Dick, Baasch or Pola Rise and shared festival stages with the likes of Aya, Aquarian, Loraine James, Kraftwerk, Skepta, GusGus, Fatima Al Qadiri, Lafawndah, Moderat, Richie Hawtin, The Whip, Brodka, Rebeka or Zoot Woman.
