Flore Benguigui (L'Impératrice) is a passionate and creative activist who joins the Keychange movement in a context where the music industry has been greatly weakened by the health crisis. Gender equality remains more than ever a topical issue and Keychange is delighted that committed artists such as Flore, agree to represent the program and to carry its messages loud and clear in France.
Despite the gradual exit from the crisis and the recovery of the music sector, it is important to continue the mobilisation for its survival, and the continuation of the reflection on the place of women in the music industry in order to offer current and future generations a more equitable and inclusive industry.
More and more music organisations and festivals are committing themselves and setting long-term goals to move towards greater parity, thus demonstrating a growing interest in the issue of inclusion and representation of women within the music industry.
With the announcement of its first French ambassador, Keychange increases its visibility in France with the main objective of encouraging organisations to become more involved in this positive change.
A total of 25 French organisations have signed the Keychange declaration of commitment to gender equality. This commitment aims to concretely work towards more parity and to offer a better representation to women and gender minorities within the music industry.
Flore Benguigui
Flore Benguigui (L’Imperatrice) joins a prestigious cohort that includes artists Joy Denalane, Peaches, Kate Nash, planningtorock, and many more, and is the first France-based individual to join the movement for change in an ambassadorial role. Flore will advocate for Keychange and help to grow the reach and impact of the movement.
This announcement is also an opportunity to highlight the current call for applications to select the next promotion of artists and innovators who will participate in the 2022 capacity building and talent development program. The artists and innovators whose applications are selected will benefit from a complete coaching and training program and will be programmed by one of the European partner festivals. Flore Benguigui joined the band L'Impératrice in 2015 as a singer and songwriter. When she is not touring with the 5 other musicians, she sings jazz in Parisian clubs and launches in 2021 her podcast Cherchez la femme, about the unsung female musicians of history.
Since the release of the 3rd EP, the group with disco-pop influences has experienced a meteoric rise and tackles current themes such as feminism or the omnipresence of social networks. As a committed artist, Flore takes advantage of this visibility to share her testimony and denounce violence and discrimination against women in the music industry. With this aim in mind, Flore has multiplied her interventions and actions in favor of gender equality in recent years, notably by speaking in the media and participating in roundtables and working groups on the subject.
Her participation in the Keychange programme as an ambassador marks a new step in her commitment.
Flore Benguigui said: “For centuries, girls have been struggling to get the recognition they deserve in the music industry, break with conventions and follow their own path. Lately, things seem to slowly evolve in people's minds but the figures are still frightening. That's why I'm very honored to take part in an organization that really wants things to change now and for good, offering real solutions to bring equal opportunities for all genders. As the only woman in a band of boys, I feel this urge to support all other women who are fighting every day to be part of this industry and to create, perform and evolve in a safer environment, and most of all be recognized, seen and heard for what they are really worth.”

Flore Benguigui (L’Impératrice) est une militante passionnée et créative qui rejoint le mouvement Keychange dans un contexte où la filière musicale a été fortement fragilisée par la crise sanitaire. L’égalité femmes-hommes reste plus que jamais un sujet d’actualité et le réseau européen Keychange est ravi que des artistes engagées comme Flore, acceptent de représenter le programme et de porter haut et fort ses messages en France.
Malgré la sortie progressive de la crise et la reprise du secteur musical, il est important de continuer la mobilisation pour sa survie, et la poursuite de la réflexion sur la place des femmes dans l'industrie musicale afin d'offrir aux générations actuelles et futures, une industrie plus équitable et inclusive.
Les organisations musicales et les festivals sont de plus en plus nombreux à s’engager et à se fixer des objectifs sur le long terme pour tendre vers plus de parité, démontrant ainsi un intérêt grandissant pour la question de l’inclusion et de la représentativité des femmes au sein de la filière musicale.
Avec l’annonce de sa première ambassadrice française, Keychange accroît sa visibilité sur le territoire en France avec comme principal objectif d’inciter les organisations à s'engager davantage dans ce changement positif.
Au total, 25 organisations françaises ont signé la déclaration d'engagement de Keychange en faveur de l'égalité des genres. Cet engagement vise à œuvrer concrètement à plus de parité et à offrir une meilleure représentativité aux femmes et aux minorités de genre au sein de l’industrie musicale.
Flore Benguigui (L'Imperatrice) rejoint une cohorte prestigieuse comprenant les artistes Joy Denalane, Peaches, Kate Nash, planningtorock, et bien d'autres, et devient la première créatrice en France à rejoindre le mouvement en tant qu’ambassadrice. A ce titre, Flore contribuera à accroître la portée et l'impact du mouvement.
Cette annonce est l’occasion de rappeler l’appel à candidatures en cours pour sélectionner la prochaine promotion d’artistes et de personnalités innovantes qui participera au programme de renforcement des capacités et de développement des talents pour 2022. Les artistes et innovatrices dont la candidature aura été retenue, bénéficieront d’un programme d’accompagnement et de formation complet et seront programmées par l’un des festivals européens partenaires.

Flore Benguigui rejoint le groupe L’Impératrice en 2015 en tant que chanteuse, compositrice et autrice. Quand elle n’est pas en tournée avec les 5 autres musiciens, elle chante du jazz dans des clubs parisiens et lance en 2021 son podcast Cherchez la femme, sur les musiciennes méconnues de l'histoire.
Depuis la sortie du 3eme EP, le groupe aux influences disco-pop a connu une ascension fulgurante et aborde des thèmes d’actualité comme le féminisme ou l’omniprésence des réseaux sociaux. Artiste engagée, Flore profite de cette visibilité pour partager son témoignage et dénoncer les violences et les discriminations faites aux femmes dans l’industrie musicale. Dans ce but, Flore a multiplié ces dernières années, ses interventions et ses actions en faveur de l’égalité femmes-hommes en prenant notamment la parole dans les médias et en intervenant à des tables-rondes et groupes de travail sur le sujet.
Sa participation au programme européen Keychange en tant qu’ambassadrice marque aujourd’hui une nouvelle étape dans son engagement.
Flore Benguigui (L’Impératrice) a déclaré : « Depuis des siècles, les femmes se battent pour obtenir la reconnaissance qu'elles méritent dans l'industrie musicale, pour freiner les conventions et suivre leur propre voie. Même si ces derniers temps, les mentalités évoluent, les chiffres restent effrayants. C'est pourquoi je suis honorée de prendre part au programme Keychange qui œuvre pour accompagner un changement durable, en offrant des solutions concrètes et réalistes pour l'égalité des chances. En tant que seule femme dans un groupe d’hommes, je ressens le besoin de soutenir toutes les autres femmes qui se battent chaque jour pour faire partie de cette industrie, pour créer, se produire et évoluer dans un environnement plus sûr, et surtout être reconnues, vues et entendues pour ce qu'elles valent vraiment. »
Keychange se réjouit de travailler avec Flore dans les années à venir, avec pour objectif d'étendre son travail et son réseau en France.
