Gender Equality Index in Europe

The 2024 Gender Equality Index, published by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), tracks how women and men compare across key areas: work, money, knowledge, time, power, and health.

The Gender Equality Index score for the European Union is 71 out of 100 points. This marks an incremental 0.8-point improvement on the 2023 Index score and an increase of 7.9 points in total since 2010. Sweden leads with 82, Romania ranks lowest at 57.5 — and the gap between countries is widening.

Convergence analysis shows that gender equality disparities within the EU decreased between 2010 and 2022. Despite different starting points, 15 Member States are now closer to the EU average than in 2010.

These results are a reminder: progress is fragile and not immune to backlash. In today’s shifting political and economic climate, gender equality cannot be sidelined.

An inclusive and equal EU will remain out of reach unless Member States stand firm and prioritise gender equality. That’s why Renew Europe has called for adequate and sustained funding for EIGE and its work.

Because gender equality won’t happen by chance — it takes political will, concrete action and the data to back it up.
